The value of food labelling

Here’s a question: Which of these products contains the most sodium?

Sodium content

If you chose the one with the label proclaiming “50% Less Sodium,” that would have been a good guess.

It would also have been wrong.

The nutritional labels are surprising. The can with the “50% less sodium” actually contains more than twice the sodium of the other (180 mg per serving, compared to 85 for the can marked “organic”). Same serving size. Same brand.

It’s probably 50% less than their regular brand beans. Organic is always the better way to buy, although more expensive usually.

S&W’s “regular” black beans contains 370 mg sodium per serving. So S&W’s low sodium product does, indeed, contain about half the sodium of the regular offering

The company’s organic line is not the standard fare.
