Campaign events at Cafe Julia

Just for fun, I checked how many campaign fundraisers have been held at Cafe Julia over the past several elections. According to data collected by the Campaign Spending Commission, there were a total of 26 fundraisers from 2014 through today.

By far the most popular fundraiser venue is the Mandalay Restaurant on Alakea Street, just a few steps from Cafe Julia. It has hosted 141 campaign fundraisers over the same period.

Here are the events reported at Cafe July, including the candidate’s name, person in charge, and the fundraiser date.

Only the mast remains

A week after a small sailboat ran aground just offshore near the Kahala Hotel, it has apparently been removed.

After a day in shallow water, the tide washed the boat up on to the sand in front of the 2nd green at the Waialae country Club. It’s been bouncing around there since last Wednesday.

But this morning it was gone, all except for the aluminum mast and remnants of a sail, washing in the waves of this morning’s King Tide.

That seems like pretty speedy procurement by the state land department for the salvage operation.

That amazingly crowded LG field

The already crowded field of candidates who say they’re running for Lt. Governor on the Democratic Party ballot continues to grow. Just for fun, I decided to check out what resources the candidate have at their disposal.

I started with the amount of money in each candidate’s campaign fund at the end of June 2017, the most recent reporting period. I also listed the campaign chair, as reported in each campaign’s organizational report filed with the Campaign Spending Commission, and fundraisers held or scheduled after the last disclosure report was filed.

In terms of basic resources, Josh Green would appear to have a commanding lead in organization and fundraising, including an October fundraiser in New York City. Green’s fundraiser notice listed himself as the person in charge, so we don’t know who was on the ground organizing this in NYC.

Green reported having over $485,000 in cash on hand at the end of June, putting him far ahead of the other announced candidates who have formed campaign committees.

By comparison, retiring Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui reported spending $909,111.06 during the 2014 primary election period. Clayton Hee, who lost to Tsutsui in the primary, reported spending $704,484.02.

My attempt at a vegan curry

I tried something like this once before with mediocre results.

But last night, with vegan friends coming over for dinner, I decided to try again with a vegan curry. This time, success!

This time I had a basic plan.

I chopped the cauliflower, carrots, and mushrooms in advance. Opened a can of garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained, and rinsed. Added some lemon juice to the cauliflower.

Then I chopped a large onion and cooked in a cast iron pan over medium heat for 20-25 minutes until the onion was mostly caramelized, added the cauliflower until browned slightly, then added curry powder, garlic, raisins, a small hot pepper, and chickpeas, followed by some vegetable broth. Then covered and let it simmer for a while. Added carrots and mushrooms, add perhaps a little wine, then let it all simmer again. Then its time to taste and decide what it else it needs. Last night, once the flavors came together, it was really quite good!

Meda added a large fresh green salad, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado. We added salad dressing, while our friends used simple lemon juice.

Red and white wine were opened.

This was my most successful cook’s foray to date into a vegan meal.
