An incident at Honolulu airport this week made worldwide news this week. But you might not have understood all the attention if you only read the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Here the news as it was reported by the Daily Mail (U.K.):

Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, 67, was detained and later released in Honolulu, Hawaii
His associate Felina Salinas was charged with bulk cash smuggling after claiming $350,000 in undeclared cash was hers
US Customs and Border Protection Agents reportedly found the money in $100 bills stuffed inside socks in a suitcase on board private jet
They also seized parts of military-style rifles on Cessna Citation Sovereign jet
Quiboloy was not arrested and allowed to return to Philippines on a commercial flight
He founded Kingdom of Jesus Christ church in 1985, after claiming to have heard God’s voice telling him in 1973, ‘I will use you’
Quiboloy said God made him his ‘Appointed Son’ in 2005, and that he has been living sin-free since that time

The story was broken here by Hawaii News Now, which reported all the details about the “appointed son of god,” the guns, and the cash.

But when the Honolulu Advertiser reported the news, it told only part of the story.

A reader pointed out to me that you would not have known several major details if you relied on the Star-Advertiser version of the story.
The Star-Advertiser did NOT report:
– The private jet was to transport Apollo Quiboloy, a noted evangelist, back to the Philippines. Quiboloy is a long-time friend of Rodrigo Duterte.
– The woman arrested is a church business manager.
– Also found on the jet were parts to assemble military rifles and guns.
In an email, the reader also commented:
Hawaii News Now reported the full story. Why not the Star Advertiser? The S.A. version leaves the reader with a vastly different impression.

But I think you meant to point out that Quiboloy’s friend Rodrigo Duterte is the hugely controversial PRESIDENT of the Philippines.

No, that was not an oversight. Ian assumed, correctly I feel sure, that his readers know who Duerte is and know his reputation.
OK, but I suspect that assumption may assume a bit too much.
By the way, it’s DUTERTE.
Similarly, there was an article in the Star Advertiser about the manager of the State ERS being fired on Monday but there was no mention of the Wall Street Journal article a few days later mentioning the State ERS as having employed an investment strategy that blew up, costing it and some other pension or endowment funds significant amounts.

It’s not every day that the feds seize a high-end long-range private jet in Honolulu.
Will there be any follow-up to clarify who owns the jet, where it is based, where it has been, and what will happen to it?
And what about the gun parts?
