There are a lot of things that could have been included in the charges pending against Mike Miske and his remaining five co-defendants, but were left out in order to keep the number of charges manageable.
Take gambling.
Documents buried in the various records filed in court show Miske and a number of his associates were heavily into gambling, including online and sports gambling.
Here are a few of the gambling vignettes from these documents.
On November 24, 2014, a confidential reported that MISKE, the owner of M Nightclub
owed $40,000 in gambling losses to a Honolulu bookie, and that Miske refused to pay.
In June 2015, a source reported that Mike Buntenbah, aka Mike Malone, and another employee of Miske’s “won a lot of money sports betting during football season.”
Miske participated by having an employee place bets for him. For example, on October 10, 2015, an employee sought to place an $8,000 bet on the Patriots/Cowboy game the following day. He said it was on behalf of the “Kamaaina guy,” which the bookie understood referred to Miske.
In October 2015, investigators were told Miske “would hold a meeting each morning at KTPC; during the meeting, MISKE and his employees would discuss sports bets. MISKE would complain about losing a $10,000 bet on a football game.”
In March 2016, a source reported they had been left with a gambling debt of about $20,000 “due in part to allowing Miske access to their internet gambling account on the website www.spicyhot.com. Miske’s portion of the debt was $6,000. At the time, Miske’s son, Caleb, was hospitalized and would soon die. Miske texted the source that he could not be bothered with the debt.
Cash pay-outs and collections were often conducted during KTPC meetings (referring to Kamaaina Termite and Pest Control).
An employee reportedly once took $10,000 cash he had collected from Kamaaina Termite customers for their fumigation projects and used the money to place sports bets. He lost, and owed Miske $10,000.
A cousin of Miske’s, who investigators said appeared to be the “house” through which Miske and employees placed bets, later agreed to cover the loss.
Most of these tips regarding gambling came during the period 2014-2016, and it’s not clear whether they continued in the same way before or after those dates.

Gambling = Money laundering.
While gambling has widely been used to “clean” ill-gotten gains, most, if not all, of the gambling described here is illegal. Additionally, losing substantial sums of money or refusing to pay your debts is the worst money laundering scheme I’ve ever heard of.
Gambling is FUN when you collect the kala when you win and ignore the debts when you lose. I think it’s called “win-win”.
