Two new visual resources

Here are a couple of new resources worth noting.

“Documenting Activist: The early days of the Native Hawaiian Movement,” was aired at the recent Hawaii International Film Festival.

It consists of newly digitized archival footage, including a 1984 KITV special on the Hawaiian movement and clips from 1976-1977 Protect Kaho’olawe ‘Ohana video footage.

Veteran videographer Joan Lander, of Na Maka o ka `Aina, writes that “the good folks at ‘Ulu’ulu put this past Sunday’s ‘Documenting Activism‘ presentation up on their website.”

The link will take you to the online video.

And the Hawaii State Archives recently announced the release of its digital release of the Queen Lili?uokalani Photograph Exhibition in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of her passing.

The image files are very large, so you probably don’t want to browse the collection if you have a very slow internet connection.

A look back for Feline Friday

We’re still in New Zealand, returning to Hawai‘i on a flight this evening. And I only brought enough new photos for last week’s Feline Friday.

So I went into my stash of videos and pictures stored in Amazon’s cloud, and finally figured out how to get one of them uploaded to YouTube and ready to share.

There’s a story here. We became good friends with a family that lived on our street for three years, from 2004-2007. And Toby became good friends with their twin daughters, who had just finished the third grade when they left Hawai‘i in 2007 (I think that’s right).

When they were gone, Toby would still go over to their house to look for them. I would have to go down the street and bring him home. I don’t remember how long this went on, but it was more than six months.

Anyway, here’s Toby outside their former house, watching for the girls.

Feline Friday: Worrying about Mr. Toby

We got an update last night from the Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center of Hawaii, where Toby is being cared for.

Their deep dive diagnostics have found several ailments in this nearly 15 year old cat (Toby is just a couple of weeks shy of his 15th birthday). Some of these are theoretically worth worrying about in the longer term, but are probably not directly related to the acute problems that took him to the vet. Or at least that’s what we’re hoping as we absorb the vet’s news, and try to focus on the immediate issues.

The most relevant bad news is that the infection has traveled from his lower urinary tract up into his kidneys, so becomes somewhat more difficult to treat and can result in longer term loss of kidney function. We won’t know much about that until later today, when they’ll do another blood test to determine whether he’s responding to the fluids, a different antibiotic, and an anti-nausea drug.

But for this Feline Friday, enjoy this little video from 2012 showing Toby in better times. We were still living in Kaaawa, and I was down for what I hoped would be an afternoon nap when Toby went into his routine. I’ll let the video take it from there.

Get well, Toby!
