Feline Friday: Romeo & Duke are the Odd Couple

After Ms. Kili died two years ago, Romeo and Duke started being buddies. Feline Friday regulars will be familiar with photos of The Boys just hanging out together.

Well, it’s now gone to a new and weird level.

Romeo has started kneading on Duke, like a kitten will knead on its mother. This is accompanied by Romeo softly biting Duke’s neck while he paddles away on him. It’s not really a bite. He’s really just hanging on. And it leaves little dried spit spots on Duke’s neck and back. It took me a while to figure out that those were connected to Romeo’s kneading sessions.

Is this some kind of kinky cat sex thing? Romeo never transitions to trying to hump Duke, but the kneading obviously feels good. Duke just seems to put up with it for a short while before breaking up the scene. I don’t know whether to discourage Romeo from this behavior or just let the two of them work it out.

I’ve posted a sample video below.

The dawn of a new year

Meda and I went down the street to watch the sunrise from Waialae Beach Park. By the time the sun made its appearance, there were more than 75 people in that one little stretch of beach, with others spread up and down the beach in both directions.

Here’s a 1-minute video as we waited for the sun.

And then a few photos.

Sunrise on New Year's Day

Honolulu Marathon winner as he passed our house this morning

Kenya’s Lawrence Cherono was moving at a blazing pace when he passed our house this morning. I think it was just before 6:45 a.m. when he went past. He set a new course record today, breaking the one he set last year.

I caught it on iPad video, and dropped to slow motion as he went by so that you can appreciate his stride after already running nearly 23 miles.

It really was a thing of beauty.

By the way, that’s our house just as he passed where I was standing.

New video presents the history of Waikiki

Thanks to Malcolm Gault-Williams’ Legendary Surfers newsletter and website for pointing me to a new video, Kai Piha – Ka’ahele Ma Waik?k?.

It’s a historical tour of Waikiki led by Hawaiian historian, John Clark.

In this documentary Hawaiian historian, John Clark, takes you on a Ka?ahele Ma Waik?k?, a tour of Waik?k?, and shares its surfing history. He talks about the ali?i who lived there and loved its waves, the Hawaiian place names of its shoreline areas and surf spots and the styles of traditional Hawaiian surfing that were practiced there. Ka’ahele Ma Waik?k? offers a truly unique look at one of the most beloved places in Hawai?i.
