And then there was Mr. Boogie

We spent the night in Kaaawa again, and managed to get out for our walk a few minutes before dawn. We’re discovering that most of the dogs we knew so well out there in Kaaawa have died of old age, or are hanging on despite the ravages of time. A friend carried Paco, a little chihuahua, out to “see” us, although I’m pretty sure he couldn’t see much at all. And back on Kekio Road, Pono came out to bark at the front gate of his house before accepting a biscuit, like in the old days. But he was a lot slower and it took a bit longer for him to process the interaction.

We were glad to see these two, but were really very happy to later find ourselves face-to-face with Mr. Boogie. He lives just around the corner from our old house in Kaaawa, and would often be the first dog we would see in the morning. We haven’t seen him in quite a while, and were worried that perhaps we had missed our chance to see him again. And now, there he was.

He’s a lot older now. A lot slower. His eyesight and hearing seem to be failing. But he perked up when offered a treat, or two, or three.

I tracked back to the first photo of Boogie that I posted at the end of 2007. He had just recently become the new puppy on the block. And quite an addition to the neighborhood.

Boogie was a big, strong dog in his prime. He always liked most people, except for people on bicycles. And his friendly enthusiasm could be a problem because of his size. Too much of a good thing at times. He was a breakout artist in those earlier days, and always managed to escape in order to wander the neighborhood. Some neighbors were pretty unhappy with his antics, but somehow he survived all those years. When another friend’s Rottweiler across the street was in heat in 2009, Boogie managed to make it over, under, through, or around several fences in order to father a fine litter of pups.

Here’s how I described him a couple of years later.

If you don’t know Boogie, he might be intimidating, but he is a totally sweet dog. And that tail! When it’s in full swing, it is almost a weapon! Watch it going from side to side. It manages to make the full circuit, hitting first one side of his body, then swinging around to hit the other. I’m surprised he doesn’t have bruises on both sides!

Anyway, without further introduction, here is Mr. Boogie and his tail.

Honolulu Marathon winner as he passed our house

The winner of this year’s Honolulu Marathon, Titus Ekiru, crossed the finish line on the other side of Diamond Head about two hours ago. His time was the second-fastest ever recorded in the event.

When he passed our house, which is about 22.5 miles into the race, he was all along, about three minutes, or more than half a mile, ahead of the next fastest runner.

Here’s the view from your front row seat.

Feline Friday: Duke was a fine kitten!

Our on again-off again wait for Hurricane-Tropical Storm-Tropical Depression Olivia left me short of feline photos for the week.

So I’m retreating into the past again. Annie’s kitchen photo was featured recently, so here’s Duke’s opportunity.

The following post was originally published in 2012, when Duke was 10, and we were still living in Kaaawa.

So, from 2012:

Duke at age 10Mr. Duke, our big (too big), beautiful tabby point Siamese who turned ten earlier this year, welcomes you to another Feline Friday.

We rescued Duke’s mother, who we named Cybelle, from the home of a classic cat hoarder at an undisclosed location on our side of the island back in early 2002. Duke was one of three kittens born just about 60 days later.

So…among the treasures that turned up in the bag of old videos that I’ve been in the process of digitizing is this little 90-second segment of Duke as a kitten. Judging from his size, this was likely late in July or early August of 2002, and Duke was discovering the joys of housecleaning.

Cameo appearances are made by Ms. Wally, who looks much like she does today, and by Ms. Cybelle, who the camera catches a couple of times. Duke’s coloring today matches that of his mother.

In any case, it’s a short video and a nice way to end what has been a stressful week.

Throwback Thursday: 1982

Yours Truly, 1982.

I’ll just take this description of Na Maka o ka Aina’s Kahoolawe Video Archive:

On March 6, 1982, five years after the disappearance of George Helm and Kimo Mitchell in the seas off the island of Kaho‘olawe, the Protect Kaho‘olawe ‘Ohana held a tribute to the two men at ‘Iolani Palace in Honolulu.

Representatives from the Helm and Mitchell families along with community members, singers and musicians from Kaua‘i, Maui, Moloka‘i and Hawai‘i island joined their O‘ahu compatriots in remembering the legacy of George and Kimo and the actions of many others who worked peaceably to stop the U.S. military bombing of Kaho‘olawe.

If you’re so inclined, a video of my short presentation can be found here.
