We went to a matinee showing of Michael Moore’s “Sicko” yesterday in downtown Portland, Oregon.
Yup. We’ve been there for several days, and fly back later today.
We were surprised to see former Congressman Ed Case’s smiling face in a quick Sicko scene, caught as a bystander during a visit to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay while Moore interviews the person sitting next to him.
It was a sad reminder that Case backed the Guantanamo facility while in Congress. Here’s what he had to say in 2005:
“GTMO is being operated well and operated in a way that is necessary for the safety and security of our country,” said Case (D-Hawaii) yesterday in a conference call from Washington, D.C.
Some members of Congress have called for the shutdown of the detention facility at the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay due to allegations of abuse of detainees. Case described the call from those advocating for the closure as “naive.”

Recieved a request for contributions from Ed Case today. Sadly, I shredded it.
I campaigned for Ed with enthusiasm, and I especially appreciated his willingness to openly communicate. But his conservative, safe, positions became inapproptiate during these times demanding leadership and action. His decision to caucus with the “Blue Dog” DINOs capped it for me, along with his support of the bankruptcy bill.
