Bamboo or monstera?

This has nothing to do with the 4th of July or anything else of substance.

But…we recently watched an episode of Antiques Roadshow that featured what was described as a French tapestry done just after WWII.

The appraiser referred to “kind of bamboo-looking motifs through the tapestry.”

Yes, the background pattern appears to be bamboo, but those dominant white leaves certainly look like Monstera, don’t you think? They don’t look anything like bamboo leaves.

I took this photo of the monstera growing off our front deck. It appears to be a pretty good match.

What do you think?

Definitely monstera. But it is odd that they seem to be growing on some kind of tree, instead of a vine…

    Beautiful either way though!

What about the courtship of two insects of apparently different species on the right side of the panel.

“Vive le difference!” seems to be the theme of the tapestry.

Somebody needs a botany lesson. Yes , the leaves look like monstera but although the background has some vague bamboo characteristics it is not. Bamboo is a grass and would never grow in that tree shape. What is it called? Artistic license?

most mainlanders are ignorant of the flora and fauna of the tropics. Ir even where the tropics lie.

Either it is monstera or someone has been taking too many drugs after looking at bamboo…then again they are French…..
