It looks a lot like “R.I.P. MoviePass”

I bought MoviePass subscriptions early this year when Costco was selling them at a discount from the company’s already discounted rates. It was a great bargain. I got one and gave the other to Meda for her birthday.

From the first week of February through up until last month, we saw 15 movies. That was more movies than we have ever watched, averaging two per month.

It was a great deal because the price was right, and we could choose anything showing at our local theaters.

Then there was the Saturday when we went to a late afternoon matinee with friends and MoviePass didn’t work. We got an error message without explanation. We had to pay for our tickets like everyone else. It turned out that this was the weekend that followed a Thursday collapse. The MoviePass system failed people across the country.

We waited more than a week and tried again. This time, we were able to see the movie of our choice at the Kahala Theaters. All went smoothly.

BUt then the bottom dropped out of the system. For a number of days, MoviePass suddenly gave no movie options at Kahala or Koko Marina, the closest theaters to our house.

And when movies did start reappearing, there were only a limited number of films, or limited showtimes available.

Today, for example, MoviePass shows only two of the eight movies playing at Kahala. A few days ago, you had a choice of Slenderman or The Meg. The latter continues to be one of just two options.

We wouldn’t have any trouble with being limited to three movies per month. That’s slightly more than we were taking in through the first six months of our subscription.

But I don’t see how they can get anyone to re subscribe if the choices of films continue to be so constrained and unpredictable. And if those short-term, monthly subscribers disappear, the company will surely collapse. After all, whatever they made our our annual subscriptions was lost months ago, given the company’s cash burn.

So it’s been fun while it lasted. But it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting many more—or perhaps any more—opportunities to view films courtesy of MoviePass.

I agree that it appears the end is nigh. BUT — Movie Pass now sends out an email telling us what movies will be honored on which days of the month. So I have planned to see Rich Crazy Asians this Sunday and Black Klansman this coming Wednesday. Thus wiping out my $9.95 and two weeks to go!!!!
