Women and girls have overcome so many of the stereotypes that used to limit what they can aspire to and what they actually achieve. And that has meant breaking out of the traditional roles that had traditionally been assigned to them.
Well, it looks like Costco hasn’t gotten the message, at least not if their selection of Halloween costumes is any indication.
At the Hawaii Kai Costco store, there are racks of costumes side by side. One obviously aimed at boys.
The other at girls.
Hopefully, there will be kids who choose to crossover. Or perhaps just skip these costumes altogether and create others that overcome the assumptions reflected in the selection of Costco’s buyers.

Are those City Chinatown yellow bags on the right side of the bottom picture?
Can you imagine the teasing a boy would endure if he showed up to school in any of those dresses? However, IMO there’s absolutely nothing wrong about girls dressing up as firefighters, Armed Service members, etc. Anyone who allows their son to go to school attired in a dress (even for Halloween) is outrageous.
You’re right warningtrack! And we shouldn’t let our boys grow up to be nurses, teachers, or stay at home parents!! Oh, the thought of it!!! If we let it start on a dress up holiday, who knows where it will end!!!!

I believe you do not understand the context of my previous comment. I never stated that a dress up holiday should prevent our children from aspiring to be nurses, teachers, or stay at home parents. I work as a teacher at an elementary school in Central Oahu. Boys, especially those that are not yet in High School attired in outfits such as dresses and tiaras will be ridiculed, even on a dress up “Holiday”. That’s the truth of our society today.
I know one 5-year-old boy who plans to trick or treat in a Wonder Woman costume. But, I think the Costco costume rack represents demand. I know that there is a nurture element, but I also think there is some nature in what kids want to dress as when in costume.
