The total amount of campaign contributions to Hawaii’s state and local candidates during the second half of 2019 was more than double the amount candidates took in during the comparable period in 2015, the most recent year without the governor’s race on the ballot.
Contributions to all candidates during the six month period between July 1 and December 31, 2019 totalled $2,932,347.77, compared to just $1,318,371.45 in the comparable period in 2015. That’s an increase of more than 122 percent.
The totals do not include amounts raised by candidates for federal office, including presidential candidates.
The data reported to the Campaign Spending Commission for the period was due on Friday, and the reports as filed by candidates are already available online.
I just downloaded the available data and did some quick totals to see where all the money went. The list below shows candidates that raised $15,000 or more during the six-month period.
The list is quite top heavy. The four leading candidates for Honolulu mayor combined to take slightly more than the overall total of all candidates in 2015.

When Amemiya first threw his hat into the ring I though “how refreshing…new blood despite his relative that’s the underling to Caldwell.”
Then I saw he works for island honcho Colbert Matsumoto who has his hands on the board of a compliant Star-Advertiser and HART (railfail). Additionally, I read an article several years ago about how Matsumoto was buying up chunks of property along the planned town section of Railfail (possibly learning of prime plots to buy through his connection to HART).
Now I fear Amemiya is ALREADY a kept man, so to speak, and nothing more than a continuation of Caldwells reign to further enrich the already obscenely rich here.
I shall look for another candidate…
