So here goes another dive into the mayoral candidates “Disclosure of Financial Interest” forms filed with the City Clerk, this time attorney Colleen Hanabusa, who formerly served in the State Senate, including several years as Senate President, and was elected to three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
She has also run unsuccessfully for governor and for the U.S. Senate.
One thing I would say is, based on the financial disclosure, Hanabusa has not used her long political career to accumulate unusual personal wealth.

“. . . to accumulate unusual personal wealth.” How do you define “unusual”?
Well…I don’t have any specific criteria. I guess I would consider it unusual if one’s personal assets far exceed what appears reasonable for someone with similar education, professional training, occupation, and job history.
Look into Pueo Enterprises……… While Colleen was State Senate President, she green-lighted an effort to grant about $75 million in tax credits for Ko Olina developer Jeff Stone. What does she get in return?? How about granting her husband’s company to be the ONLY authorized trucking company to do work at Ko Olina, PLUS a house at Ko Olina in Pueo Trucking’s name. That’s just the tip of the iceberg with with Hanabusa.
For more that 20 years I have monitored Hanabusa’s intensive pushing of ethnic Hawaiian racial entitlement programs and the Akaka bill and the secessionist movement, beginning when she showed up at a roadside rally by independence activists by Sea Life Park, far from Wai’anae, when she was first running for state Senate. I never knew why she had those relationships. Pueo Group might be one explanation. Pueo has been a sponsor of the annual convention of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. Go to nativealliance.com/pueo and look for Google cached info. Note the connection between the Pueo Group and the Inupiat (Alaska) native corporation (tribe) which was active in founding CNHA and in supporting the Akaka bill. Disgraced UH President Dobelle have the keynote speech at the first annual convention of CNHA, where the largest financial subsidy came from the Alaska North Slope (Inupiat) corporation.
“The Native Hawaiian Economic Alliance (NHEA), a Native Hawaiian Organization (NHO) and Ukpeagvik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC), an Alaska Native Corporation (ANC) recognize and acknowledge common values inherent in the cultures of the Native Hawaiian and Iñupiat Eskimo peoples. NHEA and UIC further acknowledge the strength and diversity that comes from partnerships founded on common goals and approaches to economic development and business opportunities. The Pueo Group represents an association between NHEA and UIC to pursue economic self-determination for the betterment of Native peoples and to provide quality contract services in the public and private sector. Through the Pueo Group, NHEA and UIC embrace the opportunities to mentor, to share best practices in business, financial management and quality control to maximize their respective strengths in meeting the goals of economic development that benefit Native communities.”
Perhaps I should mention that Robin Danner lived on a tribal reservation in Alaska for many years, and came to Hawaii because Dan Inouye (chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee) told her to come here and set up CNHA to support Akaka Bill.
