State Farm not renewing hurricane insurance for older homes

State Farm Insurance is in the process of notifying owners of older single-wall construction homes in Hawaii that they will no longer be able to obtain hurricane coverage from State Farm.

The company is sending letters to the affected owners announcing the change.

It isn’t clear whether this only applies in Hawaii, or includes other parts of the country.

A quick search did not turn up any news coverage of the company’s latest.

CNBC recently rated State Farm best among insurers for availability of hurricane coverage.

According to the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs:

Hurricane season in Hawaii begins on June 1 and runs through November.

Hurricane insurance is a supplemental insurance to home insurance. It covers wind-related damage associated with hurricanes.

Banks require homeowners to have hurricane insurance as part of their mortgage approval.

(Download the pamphlet: “What does Home, Hurricane and Flood Insurance Cover?” )

It is important to note that most hurricane and home insurance policies do not cover flooding. Additional insurance would need to be purchased. Flood insurance is a special policy that is federally backed by the NFIP and available for both homeowners and businesses.”

Yes, you can buy those 2025 calendars

Earlier this week, I posted the photos used for the annual gift calendars I’ve made for 2025. I’ve been making calendars to give away as holiday gifts for nearly 20 years.

That drew a question from a reader—Are these for sale? Can I order a copy?

Short answer: Yes, they are for sale, and a few are ordered, although I’m by far my own best customer.

I don’t make any money on these sales. The cost of printing is $12.06, and I round up the price to the nearest dollar. You’ll have to pay postage, but there’s no profit on my end.

In any case, here’s a link to Lulu.com where you can order any of my 2025 calendars.

Check out these online resources

I stumbled across the state’s list of online services, ranging from auctions by the Attorney General’s Asset Forfeiture division to “vessel services” (renew your vessel registration, or search for registered boats by registration number, last name of owner, or business name) and water bill payments in three counties.

Some items of the list allow you to search agency data, while others allow you to submit applications for services, pay bills, etc.

Some go both ways. The link for Honolulu building permits allows you to submit a permit application, or search the DPP system for properties or permits, which can provide some interesting details about properties of interest.

It is going to take me a while to browse through the list looking for interesting and useful items (not necessary the same).

And here’s another resource, a list of the social media accounts of state officials and agencies, as well as some county contacts as well.

If you find things of interest as you go through these lists, please share!

Happy hunting.
